This is a brilliant photographic website which we have used extensively for our own images. Many thanks to Jonathan Plunkett for allowing us to reproduce his father's photographs. To see the full collection and details of other publications visit : www.georgeplunkett.co.uk
Published in 2015,book combines contemporary reports, newspaper articles and the views and memories of people who lived in Norwich in the 1930s to tell the fascinating story of the the old courts and yards. It is an account which is about so much more than bricks and mortar, it is also the sory of the communities and individuals who called them home.
The Library has not only been a source of books but also a source of historic photographs which the Norfolk Library and Information Service have kindly permitted us to reproduce on this site. The photos have been particularly helpful when illustrating our oral histories.Photos can be viewed on line at Picture Norfolk: Picture Norfolk
This book is brilliant. Pamela Brooks has collated information from a huge range of material & produced a really interesting book giving background on all the streets, yards etc in the city. We found it invaluable when producing this site & would recommend it to anyone who is involved in a similar project.
In this book Carole & Michael Blackwell have collated Ethel's "...memories of a Norwich Childhood 1914 - 1934." As the youngest of 17 children growing up in a poor Norwich neighbourhood, Ethel takes the reader into a world few of us remember. It is beautifully written and provides an excellent read.
The Norfolk Record Office contains a comprehensive record of the clearance schemes for the yards from early attempts before WWI to the highly efficient slum clearance schemes of the 1930s. There is also numerous other artefacts relating to the yards discoverable via the record office's online index NRO
This booklet produced in 1974 provides a history of the Norwich Yards. Now out of print, copies can be obtained from the Norfolk & Norwich Millenium Library. It has been updated by Brenda Reed (see above)
This website has a simple aim : i.e to provide an ever expanding record of all NORFOLK PUBLIC HOUSES and many of their LICENSEES. It is a treaure trove of information which we found really helpful. For full listings see : www.norfolkpubs.co.uk
