Boar's Head Yard

Boars Head Inn, Surrey Street , Norwich. George Plunkett’s photo reproduced by kind permission of J Plunkett

Located at 2 Surrey Street, the Yard took its name from the Boar's Head pub. The building has a colourful history originally being the house of Alderman Richard Browne in the 15th century before becoming a pub. In 1783 it was listed as the Greyhound than renamed as the Boar's Head c1843 (the name was taken from the coat of arms of the Norgate family who were the licensees at the time). Subsequently in 1854 the first Norwich Music Hall was held here - although it was not successful. The Boar's Head (pictured here in 1934) was damaged in air raids in 1943 and subsequently demolished and rebuilt in 1952 so that the road could be widened. Today the area forms part of the Aviva (Norwich Union)complex
